2010 Class D Preview Page In class D the Westmoreland Bulldogs won the title in 2009 but have moved up to class C. This season class D is wide open as many perennial playoff teams like Dolgeville, Onondaga, Weedsport, Mohawk, and Cooperstown look to make a run at a sectional title. Don't count out teams like Sandy Creek, West Canada and Waterville that could also make noise this season and grab a hold of a playoff spot. Class D also has three leagues this season the East West and South. Class D could be one of the most contested and interesting to watch in 2010. Class D East | Rank | School | Preview | | 1. | Dolgeville Blue Devils | With returning skill players on both sides of the ball and good numbers look for the Blue Devils to again be sectional contenders. | | 2. | West Canada Indians | With a strong group of younger players look for the Indians to be a playoff contender this season. | | 3. | Mohawk Mohicans | Though they have many to replace, look for mohawk to be in the thick of things in the D East | | 4. | Beaver River Beavers | Look for the Beavers to improve this season. Maybe enough to be a playoff contender. | | 5. | South Lewis Falcons | The Falcons took their lumps last season. However, with some returning starters they could be in the post season mix. | | Beaver River Beavers | | 2009 Record: (2-6) - Head Coach: Steve Puddington | 2010 Outlook With a little improvement from last season and a whole bunch of returning starters the Beaver River Beavers are looking to make some noise in their new home the Class D East. Coach Steve Puddington and his staff of Matt Lyndaker and Tim Freed believe they may have the players to do just that. Gone from last season squad are Justin Terry, Brandon Smith, Jeff Davis, Pete Coal, and Brett Rice. Returing to lead the offence are WR/DB Evan Buckingham, QB Dallas Pate, FB Jake Zehr, and OL/DL Mike Virkler. Defensive leaders include Buckingham, LB Paul Puddington, DL Cody Keefer, and DL Jake Meyer. Success this season according to coach Puddington “lies in the hard work many of our players have been putting in during the off season. The high motivation level of our returners along with the success that we did experience last season will be big.” A major challenge to face the Beavers this season is “Playing a number of teams that we haven’t played before, moving into the newly created Sec. III Class D East, and keeping our key skill players healthy. WE must pull together and work to accomplish our goals as a team.” Good luck to the Beavers this season. Dolgeville Blue Devils | 2009 Record:6-2 Head Coach: Chris Connolly | 2010 Outlook Dolgeville Blue Devils will again have big numbers and many young players that saw lots of playing time last season. Speed on both sides of the ball and a solid coaching staff make the Blue Devils sectional contenders once again this season. Dolgeville is led again by head coach Chris Connolly, and assistants Brian Wilcox, Dan Zilkowski, Dan Guenthner, Rob Wein, Justin Randall, Adam Jones, and Justin Daukontas. The Blue Devils lost several impact players from last season including, Zack Goyette, Chris Robotham, Zach Wollaber, Brian Harper, Gary Farquhar, Josh Jaiken, and Wesley Broat. The Blue Devils however, return some soild starters to include Sr. RB/LB Michael Barnes, Sr. RB/DB Alex Snyder, Sr. OL/DL T.J. Scharpou, Sr. OL/DL Jacob Bilger, and Jr. TE/DL Travis Kopet. Newcomers the Blue Devils will relay on this season include Jr. OL/DL Derek Barker, Jr. QB/DB Jake Darling, Jr. OL/DL Zach Farquhar, Jr. RB/LB Jared Frederick, Jr. OL/LB Jacob Jasewicz, Jr. QB/LB David Levey, Sr. DB Jacob Millard, Jr. RB/DB Ray Ruggerio, Sr. DB Cody Petras, Jr. LB/RB Kaleb Smith, and Jr. OL/LB Jessie Warner. The coaching staff believes the hard working mentality of this group of players is a positive and a key to their season. They have good team chemistry and have been working hard in the off season. The biggest challenge for the Blue Devils will be for their young players to step up quickly and to become familiar with some new league opponents. Good luck this season to the Blue Devils. Mohawk Mohicans | | 2009 Records: Mohawk (1-7) Head Coach: Roy Upson | 2010 Outlook
Changes are afoot again in Mohawk this season. The Mohicans are no longer combined with Richfield Springs and have returned to the class D East. The Mohicans will miss some key players from last season like Zach Hunt, Dillon Hassett, Cody Brewer, Mike Barse, Mike Judson, and Winston Smithson. That said, the Mohicans do return some talent especially in the backfield. Returning are Sr. FB/LB Travis Herringshaw 5’7 190, Sr. RB/DB Hunter Watkins 5’10 160, and Soph. QB/WR Carson Murphy 6’5 165. On defense Mohawk will be led by Herringshaw, Watkins, and Sr. DL/OL Greg Roe 6’2 185. Newcomers that will have to step up quickly and make an impact include Jr. OL/LB Justin Krowicki 5’10 215, Sr. WR/DB Joe Smith 6’0 165, Sr. OL/DL Zack Pohleven 6’0 220, Jr. OL/DL Blake Arcuri 5’9 220, Jr. RB/DB Steven Shaver 5’9 156, Sr. OL/DL Alex Lupino 5’8 175. Soph. Taylor Smith 5’8 200, and Sr. Ram Nichols 6’3 210. The biggest key to a winning season for Mohawk includes the development of an offensive and defensive line as the Mohicans return only one starter. Their biggest challenge is to stay healthy because of lack of depth and many positions. Good luck to Mohawk this season. | South Lewis Falcons | | 2009 Record: (2-6) - Head Coach: Brian Greene | 2010 Outlook With are still waiting on information from the South Lewis coaching staff. Cooperstown Redskins | | 2009 Record: (8-1) - Head Coach: Steve Pugliese | 2010 Outlook
2009 was a great year for the Cooperstown Redskins. They won the class C East title and advanced to the playoffs. Many of the key players from that team were lost to graduation to include Tyler Hoke, Tanner Niedzialkowski, Luke Folts, Chris Michaels, Eddie O’Brian, Jed Rowley, Chad Parshall, and Ryan Parshall. This season the Redskins will play in the Class D Central. Key returning starters on offense include Sr. RB/DB Alec Silvera 6’0 175, and Jr. WR/DB Jeremiah Ford 6’3 170. On defense the Redskins return Sr. LB Noble Mattson 5’8 150, LB Chris Wehner, and JR. DE/TE Jeff Flyn 6’0 180. Newcomers to watch out for include Sr. R.J. Shute 5’9 265, Soph. RB/DB Jacob Miller 5’8 150. The keys to this season team according to the coaching staff are “After losing a nucleus of seniors at the core of last year’s squad it will be critical for this team to come together quickly. Leadership is needed from the returners (Silvera, Flynn, Ford, Wehner, Mattson).” To be successful this year Cooperstown must “replace a number of linemen (defensive and offensive) lost to graduation as well as the development of a quarterback.” A trip to the playoffs could be a challenge for the Redskins this season in a tough class D South league.
