How to catch Meltan in Pokémon Go

A brand-new Pokémon, Meltan, is now available in Pokémon Go. In order to catch it, you’ll need to complete a new Special Research questline, one of the more difficult sets of Special Research tasks in Pokémon Go.

Before you start the Meltan Special Research quest, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you want to do it quickly.

Catch Anorith, Magnemite, Drowzee, Grimer and Scyther if you see them in the wild. You’ll need to evolve those Pokémon over the course of the Meltan Special Research questline at some point, so make sure you have at least one of each and enough Candy to evolve them when the time comes.

Current Let’s Go-themed Field Research Tasks will help you complete the Meltan research steps. You’ll need to catch both a Ditto and an Aerodactyl during the questline, plus evolve a Scyther. Keep an eye out for the following Field Research Tasks (and maybe hold onto the encounters for later, if you need to):

Make an excellent throw — encounter Ditto
Evolve 2 Anorith — encounter Scyther
Hatch 2 eggs — encounter Aerodactyl (chance of shiny variant)
Keep in mind those Let’s Go Field Research Tasks only run through Nov. 27, at 1 p.m. PST.

Now, let’s get to the nine-part Special Research Tasks that Professor Willow has lined up.

Spin 5 Pokestops or Gyms
Catch 10 Pokémon
Transfer 5 Pokémon
Rewards: 1,000 Stardust, 10 Pokeballs, 1 Egg Incubator

Step one of the questline is easy, and that new Egg Incubator will make the next step a little easier.

Earn 2 Candies walking with your buddy
Make 10 great throws
Hatch 3 eggs
Rewards: 2,000 Stardust, 2 Lucky Eggs, 1 Fast TM

Again, pretty easy. You just need to get some walking in to earn a couple Candies (switch to a 1 km Pokémon if you’re in a big hurry) and hatch a few eggs.

Catch a Ditto
Win 2 gym battles
Battle in 2 Raids
Rewards: 10 Great Balls, 3 Incense, 3 Max Revives

Catching that Ditto will be hard if you’re hoping to find one in the wild, but a Field Research Task makes it easy. Keep spinning Pokestops until you find the “Make an excellent throw” task. Then find a nice big Pokémon to make that excellent throw a little easier. With good aim, you should encounter a Ditto.

Catch 5 Steel-type Pokémon
Catch 5 Electric-type Pokémon
Earn 5 Candies walking with your buddy
Rewards: 4,000 Stardust, 5 Pinap Berries, 5 Rare Candies

With Pokémon Go’s current spawns, finding Steel and Electric-type Pokémon shouldn’t be too hard. The world is flush with Pikachu and Magnemite during the Let’s Go event.

Evolve a Grimer
Catch 5 Slugma or Gulpin
Make 20 great throws
Rewards: 5,000 Stardust, 20 Great Balls, 5 Lure Modules

Slugma and Gulpin are fairly common spawns during the Let’s Go event, and Grimer shouldn’t be too hard to find. The only challenge here will probably be racking up those great throws.

Evolve a Magnemite
Catch 5 Exeggcute
Battle in 10 Raids
Rewards: 1 Silver Pinap Berry, 1 Metal Coat, 10 Ultra Balls

You should have plenty of Magnemite Candy, thanks to generous spawns. Exeggcute are also all over the place. If you’re in a rush to complete 10 Raids, you can use a premium Raid Pass if you have them. The next step will give you three more Premium Raid Passes for free.

Evolve 1 Drowzee
Catch 1 Cubone
Evolve 1 Scyther
Rewards: 10 Ultra Balls, 1 Charged TM, 3 Premium Raid Passes

Spend those Drowzee and Scyther Candies — remember, you can encounter Scyther by completing the Let’s Go Field Research Task “Evolve 2 Anorith” — and find a Cubone in the wild. That Ground-type Pokémon is fairly common during the event.

Catch 2 Omanyte or Kabuto
Catch 2 Lileep or Anorith
Catch an Aerodactyl
Rewards: 8,000 Stardust, Meltan Encounter, 1 Star Piece

Omanyte, Kabuto and Anorith are common spawns right now, so they should be easy to find. If you can’t find an Aerodactyl in the wild, remember that the Let’s Go Field Research Task “Hatch 2 eggs” will give you one. You can catch Meltan here (and you may want to use a Pinap Berry to double your Candy take, if you want to evolve your Meltan later).

Claim rewards
Rewards: 9,000 Stardust, 1 Super Incubator, 5 Meltan Candy

Congratulations. You’ve done it.
